Music is something that has always been very important to me, and I know it always will be. It can influence my emotions, shape my days, and connect me to people and memories. Certain artists take me back to my childhood, like U2 and New Radicals from my dad, or Pink and Tim McGraw from my mom. Music also ties me to moments with people who have either passed away or moved on. For example, when I think of my granny, I think of Johnny Cash, and when I think of my grandpa, I remember the Willie Nelson song that was played at his funeral. Music also connects me to different stages of my life, certain years make me think of specific songs, albums, or artists.

My music taste has developed a lot as I’ve grown up. When I was younger, I loved rap and pop but disliked country and jazz. Over time, I started to enjoy more melodic rap, R&B, and alternative music, and eventually I even grew to love country. Now I can listen to almost any genre or time period, except for EDM and house. My favorite artists, albums, and genres change by the day, and I don’t think I could even guess what my favorite genre will be a year from now.
Music is also important because it connects me to experiences and places. Growing up in Austin, Texas, I often went to ACL since it was free for kids under 12, and I got to see bands like Phoenix, Ghostland Observatory, Radiohead, The Cure, Kings of Leon, Kendrick Lamar, and Schoolboy Q. I have also carried on a tradition of going to concerts throughout high school and college, seeing artists like Logic, Joey Bada$$, Kyle, Ian Dior, Luke Combs, Dylan Gossett, and Sam Barber. Some of my favorite memories come from live shows and the energy of being in the crowd. Even at my job, one of the things I love most is the live music we have every night. Music has always been tied to my emotions, memories, and relationships, which is why it continues to play such a strong role in my life.
